Dietrich Meyer Meyer-Ebrecht is Professor emeritus at the RWTH Aachen
University. In 1964 he received his Diploma in Electrical and Electronic
Engineering at Carolo-Wilhelmina University Braunschweig where he was
awarded a PhD in 1974. From 1964 to 1983 he was affiliated with Philips
Research Laboratories Hamburg. 1984 he was appointed to a professorship
by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at
Aachen. Until 2004 he was Director of the Institute of Measuring & Image
Processing (Lehrstuhl für Messtechnik und Bildverarbeitung).
Since 1973 his research was focussed on image
processing in medical application. 1974 he set up the Picasso project, a
first approach to PACS which he pursued after his move from industrial
to academic research resulting in first prototype systems at the Aachen
University Hospital in the early nineties. In cooperation with the ENT
and Neurosurgery Departments at the Aachen University Hospital he
performed pioneering work in surgical navigation technology leading to a
first image guided ENT operation in 1987. Later he shifted his research
interest to image analysis for the support of medical diagnostics with
particular emphasis on the exploitation of quantitative features. Areas
of application were ophthalmology, cardiology, and radiology. With his
lectures on 'Visualistics'
he established imaging and computer vision as
a subject of the curriculum of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and
Information Techniques. His current activity is concentrated, in
cooperation with the Institute for Cytopathology at Heinrich-Heine
University Düsseldorf, on
novel technologies for early cancer diagnoses
based on the analysis of cellular and sub-cellular features.
